Children's Library Assistant

This position maximizes the productivity of the Youth Services Department: by assisting the Youth Services manager with programming, collection management, and Maintenance. Part Time 25-30 hours per week; Work on a team rotation of every 3rd Saturday; and Work some evenings. Essential Duties: ● Assists in the development and presentation of innovative and creative programs and learning experiences for children to encourage reading, viewing and listening skills, use of library facilities and materials. ● Instructs children in the use of library services and resources. ● Assists the development and maintenance of the library’s materials collection for children and adult caregivers. ● Assists the development and implementation of learning experiences and programs for children. ● Assists the maintenance of the children’s area as an attractive and welcoming place for children. ● Assists with collection maintenance and shelf reading; sort and shelve materials accurately. ● Assists with coordination and planning the visits with local schools and other agencies to provide tours and outreach services. ● Assembles and arranges displays of books and other materials. Children’s Library Assistant - Great Bend Public Library 1 ● Assists with the design and composition of marketing materials such as flyers, brochures, and news releases to promote the children’s library and services, in collaboration with the Outreach Manager ● Recommends policy and improvements to the Youth Services Manager. ● Attends appropriate continuing education workshops and conferences to improve skills and professional knowledge. ● Collaborates with the rest of the department and library staff with programs and events.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, or Experience

Minimum Job Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent with some customer service experience, preferably in a library or public service environment working with youth; demonstrated experience in the resolution of complex customer service issues; must be able to work independently, cooperatively and collaboratively; good driving record and a valid Kansas driver’s license; must have unrated insurability. The Great Bend Public Library requires reference/background and drug screening for all positions. Preferred Job Requirements: Ability to engage children throughout the service space, connect children and their caregivers to a variety of information formats; be familiar with children’s culture and child development; good rapport with children; knowledge of childhood development; knowledge of children's literature; ability to create fun and educational activities for children; enthusiasm for working with children of all ages. Education/Experience Substitutions: Experience may be substituted for degree. Education may be substituted for experience.
