Job Title: Police Officer /School Resource Officer Department: Police Reports To: Patrol Lieutenant Job Summary: Current Kansas Certified Law Enforcement Officer. Under direction of the Patrol Lieutenant, develops and delivers innovative school programs which familiarize students with Law Enforcement procedures. Provides Law Enforcement assistance and training to the faculty and students of U.S.D. 428. When not performing duties for U.S.D. 428, this position will work other duties as assigned. This shall be a joint position between the City of Great Bend Police Department and U.S.D. 428. Job Duties and Responsibilities: Under direction of the Patrol Lieutenant develops and delivers innovative school programs which familiarize students with Law Enforcement procedures. This shall be a joint position between the City of Great Bend and U.S.D. 428. A. Develops and presents education programs, including safety, alcohol and drug abuse, traffic and criminal law, government, crime prevention, etc. Coordinates education programs with school personnel. B. Complies with all USD 428, city and departmental policies and procedures. C. Coordinate or assist with DARE core curriculum, prepare teaching materials (i.e., lesson plans, student notebooks, handouts, visual aids, etc.) Assist with scheduling and coordinating DARE student graduation ceremonies. Provides directions to other DARE officers in the teaching of the DARE curriculum. D. Maintains good relationships with school principals, counselors, and other key school personnel. E. Visits classrooms as time permits. F. Prepare and give presentations at faculty in-service meetings, parent education evenings, PTA meetings, community service organizations, etc. G. Participates in extracurricular activities with students. H. Attend school in-service training sessions as time permits. I. Meets with U.S.D. 428 administration for feedback and program development. J. Develops and maintains an expertise on events and information related to the schools and students. K. Appears on television and/or radio promoting the department and programs. L. Takes and writes police reports when appropriate and required. M. Follows all protocol and guidelines established as a Law Enforcement officer for the Great Bend Police Department and maintains high ethical standards for the performance of duties in support of the department. N. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Position Salary and Benefits : • Certified Pay: $22.22-$32.53 per hour (dependent on experience and qualifications) • Built in overtime pay with opportunities for more. • Uniforms and Equipment provided by the department. • Vacation and Sick leave. • Blue Cross & Blue Shield Health Plan, with an optional health savings account. • 401 Retirement Plan and 457 Retirement/Deferred Payment Plan. Working Conditions: Work is inside and outside and involves prolonged sitting. Flexibility is important because of the need to enter and exit vehicles frequently, inspect buildings, climb over and around obstacles, suddenly move out of the way of danger, etc. Mental alertness is important because of the need to make fine discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger, or to discover inconsistencies in the testimony of witnesses or suspects, etc. Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a very short period. Subject to eyestrain. Involves contact with dangerous people, exposure to hazardous material, narcotics, exposure to noise, and noxious odors. Subject to callback and working rotating shifts.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, or Experience

Qualifications: Current Kansas Certified Law Enforcement Officer plus: A. Requires a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police administration and police methods. B. Requires a thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances which are enforced by the department. C. Requires knowledge of drug and alcohol prevention techniques, crime prevention, and teaching theory and practice. D. Requires the ability to relate well to children. E. Requires self-initiative, inventiveness, and creativity. F. Requires a working knowledge of computers and software applications. G. Requires a good working knowledge of English, spelling, grammar, and math. H. Requires the ability to communicate effectively with the public and staff in verbal and written formats. I. Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality. J. Requires the ability to exercise considerable tact and diplomacy when dealing with the public, U.S.D. 428 employees and students, other criminal justice agencies, city officials and other city employees. K. Requires a valid Kansas driver’s license. L. Preferred DARE Officer certification or the ability to obtain DARE officer Certification within one year of placement as a School Resource Officer.
