Assistant Director of Public Works

Under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works, performs supervisory and administrative work related to the day-to-day operation of Utilities and Streets divisions. A. Assists in the supervising of the Utilities and Streets divisions of Public Works. B. Keeps the Director of Public Works informed of Public Works related issues. C. Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, assists in developing and implementing Utilities and Streets goals, objectives, policies, and priorities. D. In coordination with the Director of Public Works, selects, trains, motivates and evaluates Public Works Department personnel. E. Works with Utilities and Streets supervisors and respective employees to prevent and correct deficiencies. F. In coordination with the Director of Public Works and Human Resources Director, implements discipline and termination procedures. G. Assists the Director of Public Works in the development and administration of the Public Works budget. H. As directed by the Director of Public Works, attends, and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of current trends and innovations in the field of Public Works. I. Responds to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints. J. Helps coordinate Public Works Department activities with other departments, outside agencies, and organizations. K. Assists in providing effective guidance during times of emergency to assist first responders in assessing damage and devising strategies to protect people and property. L. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: A. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles, objectives, practices, and procedures of the Public Works Department including but not limited to; laws and regulations related to installing water line/services, sewer lines, Kansas One call, and MUTCD. B. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. C. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the department director, department staff, governing body, city administration, department heads and the public. D. Ability to provide appropriate supervision to Public Works employees by providing effective feedback, dealing with problems assertively and quickly, creating a cooperative work environment, modeling appropriate behavior, promoting, and initiating change, completing appropriate evaluations on a timely basis, etc. E. Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, can efficiently and effectively organize and direct the work of subordinates toward the accomplishment of the department’s objectives. F. Ability to use sound judgment and common sense, think logically, and make appropriate decisions. G. Demonstrates knowledge of the laws and regulations related to employment practices and the supervision of employees. H. Demonstrates working knowledge of computers and modern office practices. I. Ability to understand and anticipate problems, prepare reports and budgets, interpret data, and understand manuals, articles, reports, and written instructions. J. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of issues related to streets, sewers, water, storm water and all other areas of Public Work’s management. K. Requires a valid Kansas driver’s license, preferred Kansas class B commercial driver’s license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, or Experience

Education/Experience Requires 7 years of education and experience providing the knowledge, abilities, and skills cited above. Class IV wastewater and Class III water certification required or must be obtained within a time period established by the Director of Public Works. Heavy equipment experience preferred.
