Building Inspector

Job Duties and Responsibilities: I. Under general direction of the Building Official, performs skilled inspection of plans and building construction and repair work to assure compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, dangerous buildings, and zoning ordinances and codes. A. Performs work in the inspection programs of the City. B. Carries out plan reviews and inspections involving commercial and residential construction. C. Issues building permits, collects fees, and administers building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes, and related ordinances. D. Works with contractors involved in new construction and remodels. E. Attends meetings of and advises the various building and appeals boards. F. Inspects unsafe and dangerous buildings. G. Meets with contractors, architects, developers, owners, and citizens. H. Issues certificates of occupancy. I. Delivers and follows up on corrective notices when code violations are found. J. Acts as hearing officer as it pertains to the repair or removal of unsafe and dangerous buildings. II. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Qualifications: I. Knowledge of municipal ordinances and regulations. II. Thorough working knowledge of and ability to interpret building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, construction materials, zoning codes and ordinances. III. Thorough working knowledge of construction materials and methods. IV. Ability to interpret plans and specifications. V. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, children, the public, building owners, officials, and other agencies. VI. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats. VII. Ability to use tact and judgement with the public. VIII. Ability to exercise independent judgment. IX. Possess a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, or Experience

Education/Experience: This position requires a high school diploma or GED. At least four years of experience in the construction industry. General contractor, mechanical, plumbing or electrical licenses and/or ICC Commercial Building Inspector (B2) certification, or a closely related certification within two years of appointment.
